Newspaper Collection by Shwood

[all photos courtesy of Shwood]

I know I'm dating myself here, but I'm a bit of an old media stalwart. It's true: Before I was a blogger, I worked in an actual newsroom where we put out actual newsprint. It was a  place where gruff local journalists hid whiskey in their desk drawers and took smoke breaks on the hour, and it was wonderful! So, maybe it's pure nostalgia, but I can't help but love Shwood's brand new Newspaper Collection.

Known for their wood glasses frames, Shwood launched the Newspaper Collection as an experiment in transformation, reconstruction and repurposing. Loosely translated, it's an attempt to capture paper's original state before it goes the way of the rotary phone.

The capsule collection was created using a proprietary technique that took 1,600 feet of newsprint wound into 4-inch diameter "logs." These "logs" where then sawed into thin slices to reveal a unique wood-like texture. With dense lines, swirling grains and a hint of text, each pair of frames is unique.

The collection includes three versions of the Shwood's signature wayfarer-shaped frame, the Canby. The Fifty/Fifty Acetate and Wood Original both feature newspaper temple inlays and are available with sun or optical lenses. The Wood Select has a full newspaper frame and is limited to 50 pieces.

Ranging in price from $199 to $380, the collection is available now at www.shwoodshop.com and locally in Boston at Bodega.
