'GATHERING - From Domestic Craft to Contemporary Process' at Design Museum Holon

Amazingly, in my many travels to Israel, I have yet to visit Design Museum Holon. Too many in-laws to visit, I suppose. A new exhibit opening Thursday will surely draw me there next time around, though, come hell or high water. You hear that, in-laws?

GATHERING - From Domestic Craft to Contemporary Process by trend-forecaster and curator Lidewij Edelkoort will explore today's craft movement as a backlash to virtualization and a boring, global mass market. The designers on show apply new technologies and techniques to everything from pleating, quilting and needlework to knitting, felting and even baking to completely transform crafting traditions.

Installed in the museum's lower gallery, Gathering will also feature a world-first survey of 132 5. Issey Miyake, a collection by the Japanese designer melding fashion and mathematics. Miyake conceived the project, which employs 3D pop-up methods, in August 2010 in close collaboration with Reality Lab textile engineer Manabu Kikuchi, computer scientist Jun Mitani and pattern engineer Sachiko Yamamoto. Together, the team created mathematical algorithms that were converted into 3D models before taking shape as origami-like garments. The collection continues to live on in new iterations each season.
