I finally made it to the Peabody Essex Museum before the Super Bowl for "Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel." Nothing like waiting 'til the last minute: the exhibit on the 88-year-old fashion icon shut its doors yesterday.
Apfel's impressive and wacky collection of clothing and jewelry included everything from Nina Ricci and Lanvin haute couture to flea market finds from bazaars around the world. She mixed the high and low liberally, drawing plenty of criticism along the way. I coveted most pieces, detested the rest, and walked away feeling inspired to wear whatever the hell I want!
Other local exhibits of interest:
Valérie Belin: Made Up (Peabody Essex Museum through April 4)
Furniture from the Permanent Collection (Fuller Craft Museum, Feb. 13-Sep. 26)
PIXNIT: Folie que la nouveauté (DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Ongoing)
